Drew & Haley's Corner: Past Questions

Past Questions:

Q: I'm almost one year old and have been plagued by ear infections most of my life. Is this normal? If the antibiotics are working, why am I always getting these infections?
A: Ear infections are not normal or a healthy part of growing up! Unfortunately, at your age, the Eustachian tubes in your ears run straight across, not down like your mom and dad's and your big brother and sister's. This hinders drainage of fluid. Many times the extra fluid comes from hidden food allergies. My mom uses kinesiology to test for these foods, including dairy, soy, corn, wheat, peanuts, sugar, yeast and other common allergies.

The birthing process and other bumps and bruises we get will also create misalignments in the neck and improper skull movement. These things affect the nerves supplying the sinuses and ears and prevent proper fluid movement. A thorough examination will determine if this is a problem. If so, treatment can be started to regain health of the nervous system.

I cannot stress enough that there are alternatives to antibiotics and tubes in the ears. There is an underlying cause to the problem if you are frequently getting these infections. Broad-spectrum antibiotics kill good bacteria too, which will lead to an unhealthy intestinal tract and immune system. Your body is then much more susceptible to other bugs you come in contact with.

If you do get an ear infection (redness and congestion is seen in the ear), colloidal silver or garlic oil works well when placed in the ears. Heat applied to the ears will help with any pain. Acidophilus and lactobacillus are the good bacteria we need and can be purchased in a supplement form and taken to help boost immune function.
Q: I was told by my doctor not to give my 8 month old plain water. Can you explain this to me?
A: I've heard this question in conversation too as I mingle with other patients. I asked my mom and my pediatrician Dr. Kamsler, to help me with the answer. While a newborn infant is strictly on breast milk or formula, water intake is discouraged because there needs to be room left in their tummies for proper nourishment. However, once food is introduced, water can also be added at mealtime.

Once your child is eating a few more foods and is breast/bottle feeding less, different beverages (including water) can be given. Water is an important part of the human body, no matter how small!! Strictly giving juice or cow's milk (especially too early) without any plain water significantly leads to a risk of food sensitivity and your child developing a sugar problem. There are no life threatening health risks linked to giving your child water.

Q: Can I be allergic to my mom's breast milk?
A: As infants, breast milk is the most nutritious food for your growing bodies. Your reaction is to something getting into the breast milk, NOT the breast milk itself. Something your mom is eating is not agreeing with you.

Some common foods that can be a problem include grains and dairy products. Elimination of these foods by your mom for 4-6 weeks may help you feel better. If not, some of my friends' moms have been tested by my mom for food sensitivities, and they now feel better and everyone is healthier.
